Do I have to stay on after selling?handover periods explained

Usually for a short while. Most buyers ask the seller to stay for a few weeks to introduce clients and staff, and owners who did much of the work themselves are often asked to stay longer.

A handover is how goodwill actually transfers. Clients who meet the new owner while you are still there are far more likely to stay.

What is typical

  • Two to four weeks for a salon run by a team.
  • Longer, sometimes a few months working a reduced column, where many clients book with you personally.
  • Agreed in the heads of terms, with whether you are paid for the time.

Make it work

Write to regular clients introducing the new owner, keep working your usual days so clients see continuity, and hand over the practical things: supplier accounts, the booking system, social media and the alarm codes.
